Stitches of Hope Donates to Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home

I had a great time recently delivering 150 of our beautiful handmade FREE caps to staff at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Ft Wayne. One of our members, Marilyn Vandentop, recommended we deliver caps to this facility and we began doing so 2 years ago. It was nice to hand them in person to Gail Cousino, Provider Relations Rep; Colleen Marshall, Vice President of Clinical Services; Jill Law, Donor Services; Kristen Rajchel, Development and Community Awareness Director. Here's a photo of our visit.
Please let us know if you can use caps for your medical facility. We like to help people!

Last week I delivered 150 caps to students at Indian Village Elementary School in Ft Wayne IN. The principal, Mrs Born, accepted them on the students' behalf. She arranged for this sweet photo with students and some of our caps. "We have students who can really use these caps," she said. We want to put caps in the hands of children and adults who can use them. We are looking for medical facilities across the US which could use our caps. They are free. They are made from new yarn and are pet-free and smoke-free. So far in 4 years, thanks to generous volunteers, we have distributed 8,000+ caps across the US! If you know of a place, please email me the contact info, including a phone number and email address at stitchesofhope@gmail.com. Take care, Kayleen

Happy New Year from Stitches of Hope!

Happy New Year!

I hope 2011 has been a good year for you and that you look forward with excitement to 2012. of course, no year is perfect but with God’s help, we press on. One of the best ways to get our minds off troubles is to help others. There’s no better way to do so than by making something beautiful and giving it away to someone who needs it. that’s what we’re about with Stitches of Hope. We make knitted/crocheted caps for people who lose hair from cancer and give them to medical facilities across the US to distribute free of charge. We’ve distributed 5,000 in 3 years! Thank you to our volunteers!

Here is a lovely note from one of our volunteers. “I have problems with inner ear and with my ft. I’m often dizzy and I don't drive or get out except with family. Thanks for picking up the caps I’ve made. I enjoy making these and am glad to do something for someone else! More to come in a few months! Thanks! Irene.

We rely on generous people like Irene to create our caps. We still meet weekly at the United Methodist Church in Bluffton Indiana. If you cannot make it to the meetings, please let us know and we’ll pick up the caps from your home. Or you can mail them to this address:
Kayleen Reusser
1524 N Sutton Cir Bluffton IN 46714

We’ll get them into the hands of people – men, women, children – who need them. Thank you notes from some of our recipients will be posted in the coming days.
Take care,

Here are some nice Thank you notes we’ve received recently:

From The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation: On behalf of the patients and staff of our facility we thank you for your thoughtfulness and donation to the Child Life Department. Children heal best when we can make their hospital stay as normal as possible. We also care for the social, emotional and educational needs of our patients. Thank you for supporting our efforts and making a positive difference in the lives of the patients here.” --Greg Barrett, President

“On behalf of the Cancer Center, thank you for the donation of hats for our patients. Your kindness is appreciated. Mary McCully, University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nicole at The Child Life Services Department at Children’s Hospital Boston wrote: “We would like to send you a special thank you for your recent contribution that will help make a child’s stay with us brighter.”

The Children’s Hospital of Aurora Colorado and the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne also sent thank you notes. Just so everyone knows, we always send monthly packages to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis and several places in Fort Wayne, including St. Joseph’s Burn Center. Wonderful Thank you's!

Hello from the great state of Indiana! We are in the midst of seeing our bulb flowers bloom—one of my favorite times of the year! We received several thank you notes this month so I’ll get right to them. The first is from Pam: “I have enjoyed wearing the cap I received at the Mayo Clinic. It has kept me warm during this long cold winter!”

“On behalf of all the children and families we serve at the Homeless Children’s Network, thank you for your generous and thoughtful donation of hand knitted caps made in March 2011. We strive to break the cycle of homelessness by providing relevant, effective mental health and family support services to homeless children and their families of San Francisco County. Your contribution is deeply appreciated.”—Elisabeth Walter, Program Assistant.

“I wanted to personally thank you for the winter cap I received from your organization. It has kept my head warm this winter. Thank you for your time and dedication to our Veterans.” Matthew Veil, former US Army Infantry.
This handwritten note from a child is precious: “Dear Sick People, Please take this mummy and buy that mterell that you can make hats so you can poot them on thar hed. I am sanding you 2 dollars. I hop your hair grws back. Love, Faith.” (2 dollar bills were enclosed in her letter)
We also received a thank from the IU Health Goshen Center for Cancer Care in Goshen IN.
Of course, we don't do it for the thanks received, but it is nice to know our caps are useful and a blessing to people. As Summer approaches, please consider making turbans that are light weight if you are a sewer. If you are not a sewer, your efforts are still appreciated!
